Hi everyone!

(Working on fulfilling the license agreement fulda ;) )

Long time no see.. Now I have some time to spend on the logging interface again. I sat down yesterday and started thoroughly analyzing my circuit board. Found that the problem I had may be due to me mixing concepts up..

I used a flat 9-pin cable (like a P-ATA connector cable) and I had according to Fulda's design used pins 2,3,4 and 5 on REGO-side and 2,3 and 5 on PC-side. However, my suspicion was that I had confused the leads with the RS-232 connector numbering. And therefore I re-soldered the board to use leads
3,5,7 and 9 on the REGO-side and 3,5 and 9 on the PC-side. No luck however.. the results differ almost time I run the script, the current result is:

Obviously, I somewhere took a wrong turn and need a little guidance to at least have the interface following fulda's design before I can start trying to figure out why I only get junk from (and to?) the REGO.

From the pc-side my interface is connected to RS-232, pin 1 of the cable is connected to the power supply of the USB-port. After roughly 2m of flat cable, the cable ends in the PC-side of the interface. Between the interface hardware and the REGO RS232-port there is only about 5cm of cable.


The read leads are pin 1 on the connectors.

yes - cables from old mainboards are fine - I'm using it so offen.

the data you received look like noise.
If cable length is 5cm - it would be OK.

have you checked the diagram at: http://rago600.sourceforge.net/FAQ.html

it is usual, that users forgeting to connect power pins of max232 (pins 15 and 16)

Correct Fulda, it was pins 15 and 16 that I connected wrongfully (see picture). I now connected them according to the design and got:

OK - your question is more for autistic people. I have added colors to your example.

you can see, that here is some echo - it mean you have short connected transmited and received data.

check if you have not short connect between pins 2/3 on rego header, 1/5 on optocoupler, 4/7 on optocoupler, 11/12 on max232, 13/14 on max 232, or 2/3 on PC header.

Also check if you counting pins on components:

Hi everyone!

Out of frustation I decided to solder a new filter. I just connected it and it still doesn't work!

With my multimeter, I got the following results:
Vcc: 10.6V
pin2 (mot GND): 8.4V
pin6 (mot GND): 5.4V

However, when I out of curiosity read the specification on the Max232 in the ELFA-catalog, I noticed that the capacitors should be 1uF, not 10uF which I mounted...

Have I found the problem or what do you think?

Edit: I am using MAX232CPE (https://www1.elfa.se/data1/wwwroot/webroot/Z_DATA/07302326.pdf), can that possibly be a potential source of errors?

Edit2: I found that I had mounted the capacitors with the wrong polarity, so hopefully my problems will disappear when I get home tonight..

Where you have connected ground/com of your multimeter??
Vcc is allowed between +4,5 to +5.5V not 10,6!!!!
(pins 15 = gnd and pin 16=vcc)

... some versions - mainly signed as max 3232

CPE is fine - it mean only plastic package with temperature +5 to +55C or something like that

wrong polarity is not so bad - it dramaticaly decreasing capacity, but sometime working

Your problem can be powering of max - are you sure, that you have connected pins 15 and 16 as described in mnemotechnic schematic?

I measured Vcc between Usb-out and RS232-GND, not on MAX232.

Well, I have not connected 15 and 16 at all, they are not on the schematic (http://rago600.sourceforge.net/ivt_serial.gif). Pins 2 and 6 however are connected as on the schematic

pin15-16: 0.27V
pin2-6: 0.36V
Voltage over USB compared to serial GND is 10.5V

If I haven't misread the specification from ELFA, should there not be a capacitor between pins 2 and 16?

Could the MAX232 be faulty? I have now checked this implementation a number of times

You saying, that have 10,5V between GND and power, and 0,27V between pins 15 and 16???

I informed you about this schematic 14 Mars 2010, 12:09:02 - you not read my post cerrfully   ::)

as statet on page FAQ - the schematic is same, only this is standard electrical schematic and this is mnemotechnic.

I'm sorry fulda but I don't understand the mnemotechnic one, it seems to do the opposite of the electrical schematic..  ;D

However, one important question; in which manner are you labeling the pins? The 9-pin DSUBconnector label the pins:
   1
2
   3
4
   5
6
   7
8
   9

(this is the way I soldered the connectors)

but in the schematic you instead use

   1
6
   2
7
   3
8
   4
9
   5

I'm sorry if this sounds like complains - it's not! - I just want to know what I did wrong :) I tried both ways but none worked..

Regarding pinout - in my notes is refetence to this page, where is example. I'm not writing it into docs, because there are numbers on pins. If you will use zoom magnifier to see it.
Also in both schematics is picture of connector which presenting that pinout is:

I have version  3.05 and i can reach the pump with an ethernet cabel.

Clarre - I have this working with Wifi (see previous post), using the Wifly GSX interface from roving networks (and all Fuldas code). It allows me to do what you want - remote control of heat pump. But it does need some soldering. Maybe you could learn ?
I want to control mine from the web , not just the lounge.
